While the structured shape of justified text can initially look neater (with hard edges on both sides as opposed to the soft edge of left-aligned text), it can lead to unpleasant rivers (or gaps), which can cause the design to be more disorganised.<\/p>\n<p>The job of a graphic designer is to create functional, aesthetically pleasing designs. Readability is one of the essential functions of designs containing text. <strong>Left-aligned<\/strong> text can be easier to read due to the varying line length, which helps the reader track where they are.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"t-1636467164179\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tips for using Justification!<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span><img alt=\"\" data-id=\"22916\" width=\"398\" data-init-width=\"600\" height=\"561\" data-init-height=\"846\" title=\"hypenation\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/yesimadesigner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/hypenation.jpg\" data-width=\"398\" data-height=\"561\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Example of Hyphenation!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\"><img alt=\"\" data-id=\"22917\" width=\"395\" data-init-width=\"600\" height=\"557\" data-init-height=\"846\" title=\"rivers_2\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/yesimadesigner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/rivers_2.jpg\" data-width=\"395\" data-height=\"557\" style=\"\" ml-d=\"-0.6940000000000168\" mt-d=\"-2.812000000000012\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Example of Rivers (gaps)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hyphenation<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lots of creatives stay clear from Hyphenation as it can create short sections of words at the start or end of lines; however, used with the proper settings, Hyphenation can be a great tool to explore.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You can add Hyphenation by using the shortcut&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cmd+Opt+Shift+H or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;which will usually improve the spacing between words but can introduce other issues<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can resolve these issues by going to the additional options within the Type tool and choosing Hyphenation.<\/p>\n<p><span><img alt=\"\" data-id=\"22923\" width=\"313\" data-init-width=\"682\" height=\"239\" data-init-height=\"520\" title=\"hyphen_setting\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/yesimadesigner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/hyphen_setting.png\" data-width=\"313\" data-height=\"239\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this dialogue box, you can alter how long a word must be to allow it to be hyphenated, the minimum number of letters at the start or end of a line, and even control whether you would like to see better spacing or fewer hyphens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Optical Margin Alignment<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This is a very subtle effect but helps make the text&#8217;s edge even straighter by aligning the hyphens with the outside of the text frame. You can turn it on from the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Window menu, under Type &amp; Tables, then the Story panel.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><img alt=\"\" data-id=\"22924\" width=\"371\" data-init-width=\"332\" height=\"148\" data-init-height=\"132\" title=\"optical\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/yesimadesigner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/optical.png\" data-width=\"371\" data-height=\"148\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Justification Settings<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>By going to the additional options within the Type tool, you can choose Justification, and just by tweaking these settings slightly, you can significantly improve the quality of the text.<\/p>\n<p><span><img alt=\"\" data-id=\"22926\" width=\"362\" data-init-width=\"942\" height=\"172\" data-init-height=\"448\" title=\"justification\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/yesimadesigner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/justification.png\" data-width=\"362\" data-height=\"172\" style=\"\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Word Spacing<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;\u2013 making tweaks here can help avoid massive gaps and keep the spacing tighter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Letter spacing<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;\u2013 by default, InDesign doesn&#8217;t allow letter spacing; however, some minor tweaks can help remove gaps and potentially reduce the number of lines in the text frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Glyph Scaling&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2013 again, by default, the characters are not set to scale up or down but introducing a tiny amount of tolerance can further improve the appearance of the text.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Composer Settings &#8211;&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The default setting will be Adobe Paragraph Composer, which is usually fine. However, if you work with small amounts of text and want better control over keeping certain words on one line, you can change this to Adobe Single-line Composer. Then when adding a soft break (Shift+Enter), only the following line changes, rather than the whole text frame being affected.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"t-1636467164180\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tips for using Alignment<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are a couple of ways to improve the quality of text when using left or right Alignment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hyphenation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Generally, left or right-aligned text does not need hyphens unless you have a very narrow line length to help make the edge less ragged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Balance Ragged Lines&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You can create a slightly more refined edge by choosing Balance Ragged Lines (from additional options within the Type tool).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Be sure to watch for the full tutorial for clarity!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"t-1636467164181\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As a general rule, Justification is great when you have a lot of text to condense into close columns; Justification helps create imaginary boundaries between the columns. However, if you have more space between columns, using left-aligned text can help with the readability.
